The case at a glance:

  • Whitehaven Coal plans to dig up to 17 million tonnes of coal each year for 28 years, generating a staggering 583 million tonnes or more of climate pollution over its lifetime.
  • The mine, proposed in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, would destroy at least 2,000 hectares of wildlife habitat that is home to threatened species including koalas and greater gliders.
  • Whitehaven Coal is seeking a Mining Lease and Environmental Authority for its proposed mine after the warmest year on record in 2023 and a fifth mass bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef in March.
  • EDO lawyers are representing the Mackay Conservation Group and the Australian Conservation Foundation in a legal challenge to seek a recommendation of refusal of the Winchester South coal mine due to the unacceptable impacts it threatens to cause.

“EDO is proud to represent our clients, ACF and MCG, to ensure they can have their concerns about the significant impacts of this large-scale coal mine properly heard before an independent court.” Revel Pointon, Managing Lawyer, Environmental Defenders Office
