Submission to the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
EDO welcomed the opportunity to make a submission in response to the call for input by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Rights of Indigenous Peoples in preparation for their upcoming country visit to Australia in November 2026.
EDO’s submission addressed the following critical areas based on EDO’s experience and expertise:
- Lack of comprehensive human rights legislation in Australia
- Failure to recognise, implement and incorporate UNDRIP and the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in Australian laws related to Country, Cultural Heritage and Water
- First Nations’ water access and rights
- Protection of Cultural Heritage
- Climate justice for First Nations peoples.
