The Environmental Defenders Office Ltd welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the Parliamentary Joint Committee’s Inquiry into Australia’s Human Rights Framework. In this submission, EDO addresses the state of human rights law at a national and state and territory level. EDO strongly advocates for the Australian Government to legislate an Act or Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms that includes the human right to a healthy environment, in addition to a number of other human rights that are necessary to protect people’s rights relating to the environment. Our submission makes 14 recommendations which, if accepted by the Australian Government, will better protect human rights in Australia.
