Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) welcomes the opportunity to comment on the Draft Future Gas Strategy for Tasmania (Draft Strategy). Tasmania is in an enviable position in Australia as it has been achieving net zero GHG emissions since 2014. However, without real action to reduce GHG emissions across all sectors, including the energy and industrial sectors, that achievement is not guaranteed to be maintained. EDO agrees that it is not a question of if, but rather of how and over what timeframe Tasmania moves to decarbonise its gas sector. While EDO supports the Government’s intent not to “prolong the use of natural gas and LPG …”, the Draft Strategy should be more ambitious in the identified actions and by providing a clear indication of the associated timeframe for the State’s transition from these harmful fossil fuels.
