An introduction to Commonwealth Impact Assessment

The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth) (“the EPBC Act”) sets out how the Commonwealth Government is involved in the environmental impact assessment of projects in Western Australia.

This Fact Sheet describes which projects the EPBC Act applies to, and how the Commonwealth Government assesses and approves those projects. Note that projects which need assessment under the EPBC Act will probably also require approval under the Western Australian environmental impact assessment process. For more information, see Fact Sheet: Environmental Impact Assessment in Western Australia.
