Coastal Protection

This Fact Sheet describes the legal framework regulating development in coastal areas in NSW. It identifies whether coastal protection matters fall within local, state, or national jurisdiction, and includes information about coastal zone management, emergency provisions relating to coastal protection and sea level rise, and how the coast is protected through planning law.

This Fact Sheet will be useful for people who want to know how the coast is protected from both natural and man-made impacts. It will also be useful for residents of coastal areas who are affected by coastal storm erosion, or who are planning to develop or purchase property in a coastal zone. 

Coastal management law is currently being reformed. The Coastal Management Act 2016 been passed but has not yet commenced. Our Fact Sheets will be updated to reflect changes in the law once they come into force.
