Proposed causeway to Pomanda Island – for Wellington Weir

On 23 December, the South Australian Government referred a new project under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to Mr Peter Garrett, the Federal Minister for Water, Heritage and the Arts. In the referral, the State government sets out a proposal to construct a road on the western shoreline of the narrow, sandy stretch of land, separating Pomanda Island (on the shores of Lake Alexandrina) from the mainland.  This is so that the proposed weir near Wellington (which has not yet been approved) can be built.  The Referral provides that construction would need to commence in mid February.

Release Fresh Water to the Lower Lakes, not Salt Water!

On 28 November 2008 the Honorable Minister Maywald referred a proposed action under the Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act to allow seawater to enter Lake Alexandrina, an action which will also affect Lake Albert. 

Lakes Alexandrina and Albert, and the Coorong, were listed under the Ramsar Convention of 1985 as Wetlands of International Importance.   Under Ramsar the Lower Lakes are listed as freshwater to brackish water (slightly salty) but the introduction of seawater potentially invalidates this listing.
