The EDO is a Community Legal Centre specialising in public interest environmental law. The EDO offers professional legal advice and (in a small number of cases) representation, help with environmental law research and community legal education.

The EDO exists to serve a need in the community for legal assistance with environmental problems. The EDO is a non-profit community-based organisation (EDO Constitution 2011) managed by a committee elected by its members.

The EDO is supported by a variety of public and private sources including:

Donations to the EDO of $2 or more are tax deductable.

The free EDO advisory service covers all aspects of environmental law. The service is conducted by rostered volunteer lawyers drawn from a panel of Adelaide's most experienced environmental law practitioners and academics.

The EDO is located on the South East corner of Gilles Street and King William Street, Adelaide. The entrance to the foyer of our building is a glass door in the corner of the front courtyard. WHAT DO WE OFFER? (back to top)

Appointments

Appointments are necessary and initial consultations are limited to around half an hour. Complex public interest matters may require referral to a staff lawyer for further advice or action. The EDO Advisory Service is located in the EDO office at 408 King William Street, Adelaide. The service operates in the evening on selected weeknights and appointments must be made by ringing 8410 3833 or Country Freecall 1800 337 566 during office hours.

(See EDO Guidelines for assistance) and our specific guide to unrepresented parties in the ERD Court.

Legal Representation

Where a problem requires more than the EDO initial free consultation, further assistance may be able to be given in some cases. This might include detailed research and help with preparing cases or representing clients in Court. Because the resources of the EDO are limited, further assistance is restricted to cases that the EDO considers as being in the public interest. On average, we are only able to represent one or two clients per year in Court. The Commonwealth Government will not fund activities that require litigation. Where matters are complex and time consuming, a contribution towards costs will be necessary.

Law Reform

The EDO is able to assist individuals and community groups with submissions to governments on proposed changes to environmental laws.

Community Legal Education

The EDO can arrange speakers for groups and schools on environmental law.

Internet Access

The EDO has facilities available for members, clients and law students to use the Internet for environmental law research.

Equipment available to Community Groups

Do you need a power point projector for the occasional seminar, workshop etc? We have a projector for use by groups and individuals. If you are interested in this service please contact us on 8410 3833.
