The Northern Territory occupies a unique space in Australia, socially, environmentally and legally. The NT accounts for a sixth of the land mass of Australia and yet has a relatively small population of 215,000 people. Just over a third of the population is located in the capital of Darwin, with the remaining portion located in regional and remote areas.1 Indigenous Australians represent 30% of the NT population, with 72% of the indigenous population living on aboriginal freehold land 2 outside urban centres.3

The NT environment is relatively unspoiled, compared with other areas of Australia. However, there are a wide range of environmental issues which impact on members of the community in the urban centres and remote, rural and regional areas. The NT continues to experience a high rate of urban development, while its natural environment faces significant impacts and threats from various causes.4 With the spectre of climate change and water shortage in Australia, development of the North is once again a topical issue.

In this context, Northern Territory environmental legislation is significantly out of step with other jurisdictions in Australia. Few pieces of legislation specifically incorporate principles of sustainability, or provide for access to justice through relaxed standing and costs rules or third party appeal rights. With several items of legislation currently being reviewed, and the commencement of the NT Environment Protection Authority there is a significant opportunity for improvements in the current environmental legal framework in the NT.

As the only specialist environmental legal centre in the NT, EDO NT has a significant role to play in reviewing current NT environmental law and policy and empowering the community to access and participate in decision making concerning the NT environment.

As a publicly funded not for profit organisation with limited resources EDO NT appreciates in kind support from the community through joining as members of the organisation, making donations or by volunteering.

Your membership subscription and donations will assist the EDO provide its legal services. By becoming a member of the EDO NT you are also entitled to vote at annual general meetings and nominate for the Management Committee.
