EDO NSW - NSW Planning Law Survey Dec 2009

The EDO, along with Total Environment Centre (TEC) is seeking community feedback on the NSW Planning System. The EDO has prepared a discussion paper entitled 'Planning in NSW: Reconnecting the community with the planning system' which outlines the NSW planning system and the opportunities for public participation. This survey is intended to seek feedback from those people who could not attend our community workshops which were held during late November 2009. We welcome your thoughts and ideas and are seeking input from all NSW residents. Please tell your friends and colleagues about this survey. If a hard copy is required we will post the survey to you along with a reply paid envelope.

The information gathered during this consultation will form the basis of a report to the Department of Planning and the NSW Opposition. The draft report will be made available to participants for feedback and the final report will be available on the EDO website. If you would like to receive the draft report, please include your email address at the end of the survey.

Planning Law

How important is it for you to know about the law and how to access particular provisions? Why? *

Where would you like to be able to access information about planning laws? *

Can the Department of Planning do anything to help you understand how the law works and what rights you have regarding planning decisions? *

Strategic Planning

Does the Department of Planning adequately explain the role of strategic planning in the overall planning system? For example, the significance of LEPs, SEPPs, Regional Strategies and Metro Strategies and how they interact? What more can the department do in this regard? *

Is the strategic planning framework as straightforward as it could be? Do you have any comments about the complexity of the strategic planning system? *

Can you think of ways that the strategic planning framework could be simplified? *

Is there more the Department of Planning could do to help the community understand how strategic planning works? *

Development Assessment

If you were to lodge a development application, would you know what type of development you were proposing and what type of environmental assessment would be required? For example, do you understand the difference between major projects, designated development, exempt and complying development and integrated development? *

Who should the decision-maker be for each type of development? *

Do you think the current development assessment process results in good planning outcomes? Can you explain your answer? *
