The Indigenous Enagement program commenced in 2006. It is made up of 2 distinct parts: the employment of an Aboriginal Liaison Officer and Caring for Country, a project that focuses on improving the EDO's delivery of services to Aboriginal people.
Aboriginal Liaison Officer
The EDO's Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) is employed part time to help the EDO to more effectively engage with Aborigianl people and communities. The ALO works with an Aboriginal Advisory Committee who provide guidance, feedback and expert advice on strategic direction. The Advisory Committee is made up of representatives of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, the Aboriginal Legal Service, Native Title Seervices and the Department of Aboriginal Affairs.
Caring for Country
Caring for Country is the major project of the Indigenous Engagement program. It features a booklet called Caring for Country: A Guide to Environmental Law for Aboroginal Communites. The purpose of the guide is to assist Aboriginal people to understand their rights and obligations under environmental and natural resource management law.
