Topic 2 - Planning and Development
Overview
Environmental planning and development assessment processes play a key role in managing the environmental, social and economic impacts of development in New South Wales.
This chapter provides an overview of environmental planning and development assessment law in New South Wales and describes federal development assessment processes under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
It is important to note than many State laws relating to environmental planning and development assessment do not apply to those parts of the Western Division of New South Wales outside of the major towns, as these non-urban areas are not incorporated into local government areas.
For information about the laws that apply to land management in the Western Division of New South Wales, see the section on Western Lands in Fact Sheet 2.1.7
