EDO NSW is a community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law. We help people who want to protect the environment through law. Our reputation is built on:

Successful environmental outcomes using the law
With over 25 years’ experience in environmental law, EDO NSW has a proven track record in achieving positive environmental outcomes for the community.

Broad environmental expertise
EDO NSW is the acknowledged expert when it comes to the law and how it applies to the environment. We help the community to solve environmental issues by providing legal and scientific advice, community legal education and proposals for better laws.

Independent and accessible services
As a non-government and not-for-profit legal centre, our services are provided without fear or favour. Anyone can contact us to get free initial legal advice about an environmental problem, with many of our services targeted at rural and regional communities.

EDO NSW is part of a national network of centres that help to protect the environment through law in their states.

A New Planning System for NSW - White Paper - EDO NSW Resources

The NSW Government released its Planning White Paper on 16 April 2013, along with two ‘exposure draft Bills’ (draft legislation) for 10 weeks public consultation. The White Paper sets out the Government’s vision for a new planning system, to replace the ageing Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (NSW) (EP&A Act). The White Paper and draft legislation are open for consultation, submissions and online comment until Friday 28 June 2013.

EDO NSW has prepared resources and hosting workshops to assist the community to respond to the White Paper.

Help us ensure that every environmental defender’s voice is heard!

As you may have seen, the NSW Government has now published its White Paper on planning reforms. Yes, the White Paper that you and EDO NSW have worked so hard to shape.

We now have just a few short months to look at the White Paper and to let people know what it means for them, their communities and the environment. EDO NSW plans to run workshops across NSW to explain the intricacies of these reforms. And we plan to prepare a submission that addresses the main issues – what we like and what we don’t like and to insist that the State Government address any shortcomings.

With a permanent funding cut of 27% from our major funder we cannot do all this without your help. Please, donate today and help us to ensure that the new planning reforms work for the community and the environment.

Some funding certainty for 2013-14, but challenges remain

We have some good news and some bad news for the thousands of community groups and individuals who rallied to support EDO NSW during our funding crisis of late last year.

Your voices and, from many of you, your donations have been invaluable to demonstrating the extraordinary community support for EDO that exists across NSW.

As you’ll recall, in 2012 we faced unprecedented attacks in public, in the parliament and also behind the scenes from the mining industry, the Shooters and Fishers Party and The Australian newspaper, with pressure for EDO NSW to be ‘defanged’, and calls for us to be defunded by the NSW Government.

Please click here to better understand the problem and what you can do to help.
