Acknowledgments

This Handbook is based on the outstanding foundational work of David Mossop and previous members of the Environmental Defender’s Office in putting together the Non-Violent Action Handbook, without which this edition would have been a much more difficult project.

Jeff Smith has written the new edition and it is a substantially different resource. First and foremost, it has been rewritten from the standpoint of campaigners. Amongst other things, this means that the Handbook is a much bigger proposition. It contains eighteen chapters, with a focus on specific areas – including chapters on inclosed lands, on the street, forestry areas, national parks and protected areas, water and foreshores, and Commonwealth land. This compares to the previous edition, which contained five chapters.

Many people were consulted during the conception and writing of the new edition. With apologies to those we may have forgotten, the following people should be mentioned: Michael Bozic, Steve Bolt, Scott Corish, Andrew Haesler, SC, Andrew Martin, Miranda Nagy, David Rolph, Tisha Dejmanee and Jemilah Hallinan.

We also used the following texts and resources:

  • Brown D, Farrier D, Egger S and McNamara L (2006) Criminal Laws 4th Edition, Federation Press.
  • Steve Bolt Protest and Civil Rights, available on the National Association of Community Legal Centre website at www.naclc.org.au/activist.
