1. Requests for Rural and Regional Workshops
The Environmental Defender's Office, as part of its education program, undertakes rural and regional workshops across NSW seeking to provide community legal education on a range of priority areas. These priority areas include:
Climate change;
Biodiversity conservation;
Natural resource management;
Environmental planning and development;
Environmental justice (including indigenous heritage issues); and
Corporate Social Responsibility
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from community groups and/or residents who would like the EDO to present a workshop on any of the above (or other relevant) issues.

2. Public meeting: Proposed Heron's Creek Power Station
EDO Northern Rivers, in conjunction with the North Coast Environment Council and Residents Against Power Plants (RAPP), is organising a public meeting on the evening of Thursday 12 June at Laurieton .
The meeting will discuss the legal and energy implications of a proposal by International Power to build a diesel-fuelled power station at Heron's Creek, on the NSW mid North coast. Speakers are Associate Professor Hugh Outhred from the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets at the University of NSW, and Ian Ratcliff, Senior Solicitor at the EDO Northern Rivers.

3. EDO Seeking Testimonials
The EDO is seeking written testimonials from clients across the breadth of our work, including education, legal advice, policy and scientific assessment. If you have utilised the services of the EDO and support our work we would be grateful if you would write a short letter (on letterhead, if appropriate) describing your experiences. We are particularly keen to hear from participants at EDO workshops and seminars over the past two years. We intend to use these testimonials to secure our core funding for the next three years.

4. Caring for Country Workshop: Moree
During 2008, the EDO is continuing to present a series of FREE regional workshops providing practical information about environmental law for Aboriginal people. This series is designed to complement the EDO's publication Caring for Country - A Guide to NSW Environmental Law for Aboriginal Communities .
The workshops will cover a variety of issues, including:
An overview of the legal system and key environmental laws
The nomination and preservation system for cultural heritage
Access to and permitted activities in protected areas
How the planning and development system works
The next workshop will be held in Moree . The details are as follows:

5. Coastal Law and Climate Change Workshop: Bateman's Bay
The Environmental Defender's Office is hosting a free workshop on Coastal Law and Climate Change. The workshop will cover various issues relating to coastal law and the potential avenues for future laws and policies to effectively address the impacts of climate change on coastal areas.

6. The Northern Star: Victory at last (4 June 2008)
Northern Rivers Senior Solicitor, Ian Ratcliff, is quoted in this article which discusses the outcome of the Anderson matter. In this case, the EDO was representing the Andersons, traditional land owners from Angels Beach near Ballina on the NSW North Coast. The article interviews the developer involved, whose permit to destroy Aboriginal middens was challenged by the Andersons. The Land and Environment Court decision to dismiss the appeal is described as a victory by the developer.

11. Legalwise Conference: Carbon Trading, Clean Energy and the Cost of Inaction
Legalwise Seminars Pty Ltd is hosting a two-day conference, titled Carbon Trading, Clean Energy and the Cost of Inaction.' The seminar will look at various aspects of climate change and the consumption of carbon-creating fuels, discussing ways in which Australia can seek to adapt to the impacts associated with this consumption. Mitigation measures and the potential for the introduction of a National Emissions Trading Scheme will also be considered.

13. Trans-boundary Water Pollution in China: Relief and Justice for the Affected Population
The International Development Law Organisation (IDLO) is pleased to invite you to a presentation held by Dr. Ke Jian, who has recently been awarded the first IDLO-Coca Cola Fellowship for his research project Relief for Victims of Environmental Pollution in the Context of Trans-boundary Water Management in China. Dr Ke will discuss the issue of trans-boundary water pollution between provinces in China and its implications on the local population. Ms Rosemary Lyster, Director of the Australian Centre for Climate and Environmental Law and Associate Professor at the Law School, Sydney University, will contribute as a commentator.
