Getting the Drift: a community guide to pesticide use in the NSW Northern Rivers (Revised 2nd Edition)
If you live in the NSW Northern Rivers, this booklet will help you find out. New, expanded edition published in September 2011 includes updated data, more crops, more case studies and a new section called ‘What are my rights?’
EDO public meeting: Bonshaw-Tenterfield-Lismore transmission line TransGrid and Essential Energy propose to construct a new 330kV transmission line from the interstate interconnector west of Tenterfield to Lismore to supply the Far North Coast. The environmental assessment for the proposal is on public exhibition until 24 October. On 22 September the Upper Dumaresq Action Group and the TransGrid Action Group held a public meeting at the Tenterfield Golf Club to discuss the proposal. EDO NSW Northern Rivers education officer Mark Byrne and senior solicitor Sue Higginson explained the background to the proposal, the approval processes, landholder rights, and how to make an effective submission.
Community forum: Mining on the Dorrigo plateau Anchor Resources proposes to mine antimony at several locations on the Dorrigo Plateau and the surrounding New England tablelands. In view of the potential impacts and issues associated with historic antimony mining at Hillgrove, east of Armidale, Dorrigo Environment Watch (DEW), supported by EDO NSW, organised a forum in Dorrigo on Saturday 17 September 2011 to provide information to the community and discuss appropriate responses. Topics included the mine proposals, mining law in NSW, learnings from mining in other catchments and regions, and the environmental and other values of the Nymboida and Bielsdown catchments. EDO NSW was represented by Northern Rivers senior solicitor Sue Higginson. Other speakers were from DEW, University of New England, Bellinger Landcare and Coffs Harbour City Council.
EDO NSW Northern Rivers Seminar: Gas exploration and production - Casino Three companies are currently exploring for coal seam and conventional gas in the Clarence Moreton Basin, which covers much of the Northern Rivers. Metgasco Limited already has approval for a gas-fired power station near Casino and is currently seeking planning approval for a gas pipeline from Casino over the Border Ranges to Ipswich. Red Sky Energy also recently announced coal seam and conventional gas discoveries between Casino and Grafton, and is intending to seek approval for a small power station in the area. Various environmental and legal concerns have been raised about gas exploration and production by affected communities. EDO NSW Northern Rivers held a public seminar in Casino on 11 August 2011 to provide information about what is happening in the region; discuss the potential environmental impacts; explain the approval processes involved; and inform the community about their legal rights. EDO speakers were education officer Mark Byrne and senior solicitor Sue Higginson. Other speakers were from Metgasco and the National Toxics Network.
Ballina Coastal Workshop EDO NSW Northern Rivers office held a Coastal Law and Climate Change workshop at Lennox Head on Saturday 16 July 2011. Presenters were Mark Byrne, education officer, and Ian Ratcliff, senior solicitor.
Thinking of making a submission on your Council's Draft Local Environmental Plan? This checklist has been compiled to assist community members in responding to the environmental implications of their Council's draft LEP. It is not intended to be comprehensive, but should help to identify some of the issues we have encountered in reviewing draft LEPs based on the NSW Government's 2006 standard template. It may change as new information and issues become available.
