Introduction
A tool to assist citizens in enforcing environmental law..
Compliance with the law is crucial to the protection of the environment. Most environmental legislation in NSW grants the community the right to take enforcement action.
The Compliance Portal has been created to assist the community in determining whether licence holders and those who hold various other permits, licences and permissions have complied with conditions of consent, licences, plans and legislation. It is designed to equip the community with information about the scope of activities permitted at a certain site, waterway, mine, etc. The Compliance Portal also serves as an online resource to assist environmental campaigners and the community in finding the information they need in relation to an environmental issue as quickly as possible and in one convenient place. With the myriad of environmental laws in NSW this is often a difficult and time-consuming process.
Most environmental legislation in NSW requires that certain information must be made publicly available through public registers or online resources. Much of this data is now available online, often with a fee payable. A summary of how to access this information is provided in the Compliance Portal.
Note however that every public document is now obtainable under a Freedom of Information Request subject to statutory exemptions.
See EDO Factsheet on Access to Information for further detail. This is found here: http://www.edo.org.au/edonsw/site/factsh/fs07_3.php
We will continually update the Compliance Portal with any changes to legislative requirements or if new information becomes available. We welcome your feedback.
