Adapting
to Climate Change – Law & Policy Conference
ANU
College of Law & Griffith University
Venue: National Museum of Australia, Canberra
From: Thursday, 19 June 2008 - 9:00 AM
To: Friday, 20 June 2008 - 3:00 PM
Website: http://law.anu.edu.au/cclp/events.asp
While mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions has dominated the debate
over climate policy since global warming became an issue in Australia
in the late 1980s, the second component of climate policy –
adaptation – has largely been overlooked. Rising emissions
and warming that is already in the system mean that major climate
impacts are unavoidable and that adaptation is set to become a crucial
area of legal and policy interest.
But how much
adaptation is enough? Are current legal and policy frameworks capable
of guiding Australia through the adaptation challenges that it could
face in the 21st century? How will the law evolve in the face of
global warming and will it act as a trigger for, or barrier to,
change?
Adapting to
Climate Change is the first Australian conference devoted solely
to the legal and policy dimensions of adaptation. Its multidisciplinary
program highlights the breadth and scale of predicted climate impacts
across sectors and stakeholders. With a distinguished array of international
and national speakers, the conference promises to be an essential
event for all those involved or interested in climate policy and
climate law.

occasions the responsibility for enforcing environmental legislation
falls on investigation groups within government agencies.

Conference is Sponsored by the Following Agencies:
