The Environmental Defender’s Office (ACT) Inc. is an independent non-profit community legal centre specialising in public-interest environmental law. The EDO (ACT) was established in 1995 and is part of a network of community legal centres across Australia specialising in environmental law, the Australian Network of Environmental Defender’s Offices (ANEDO).

EDO (ACT) is largely funded by the Commonwealth Attorney General’s Department under the Community Legal Services Program. The EDO (ACT) also receives funding from the ACT Law Society. The EDO relies on members, volunteers and donations to operate.
The EDO (ACT) is an incorporated association which is governed by rules of association. The strategic direction of the EDO is set by an elected committee, which meets monthly. The current committee members are:
The EDO has two part-time staff.
Kirsten joined the EDO (ACT) in November 2007 after ten years working as a lawyer in various government departments. Kirsten has a long-standing interest in environmental law and public-interest litigation.
June has had a long standing interest in financial work and joined EDO after a short stint of retirement with a mind to continue with the work she enjoys and still take pleasure in retirement.
We have a vacancy for another part-time position to assist the EDO’s Principal Solicitor in providing legal services, including assisting with the preparation of legal advice, law reform submissions and community legal education materials relating to ACT environmental and planning matters.
The position is a non ongoing (up to 12 months) part time position with flexible hours. Salary range is negotiable depending on experience. See flyer [67MB] for details.
The EDO could not operate without the commitment, enthusiasm and hard work of its volunteers. Students who have studied environmental law, lawyers, planners, environmental scientists and people with skills in education and IT are encouraged to join our volunteer program.
The EDO (ACT) is also made up of members, who are committed to ensuring that the community gets fair environmental outcomes in the Canberra region.
